Question: Did your grandfather ever describe what those treaty commissioners looked like?
Geordie: They came by boat, they usually used two canoes, they did not go to the place where people were, they would stay in the vicinity, or nearby place, for a couple of days maybe, ….so they had sometime investigate the people, our people, had gone to them to say what do you want from us, what are you doing here? You know they discovered that they …They were thinking of talking to the people, wanting to ask them to use the land, and also on behalf of the government to negotiate a land settlement, and in return they have the four dollars for treaty, for signing the Treaty. His Grandfather told him that when they were finally meeting with the people, they had their boats on the shore, and they didn’t have tables and chairs but they did have a place where they can put their papers to be signed, they were asking our people to access the land, and also access to everything else that might be in the land, like water, trees, fish, and how much to give up is what my Grandfather was asked by this person that was involved in negotiating, and he did advise this person on our side that you don’t give up everything you just give up just …just for them to use whatever they need, you give them what they need, not too much but enough for us as well, to reserve for us the land that we need, and also the timber, and other things we need…to reserve for our people…it was not a total give up…give in to the government…
